Mixtapes

A collection of some mixtapes I’ve made. They all have a story to them, and some may have repeated material in others. These were all made with Numark Total Control midi deck using Traktor 3 software, unless stated otherwise. Here they are in reverse chronological order…

The Crew Love Mixtape (Jan ’12): This is my first mixtape since getting Rane’s Serato Scratch. It took some time to learn, but I’m glad I can legitimately use something of the turntable nature. I haven’t mastered scratching yet, but the mechanical feel of records is so much nicer than using a trackwheel, providing much better control of the sound. However the downside is the sound quality, as I did not have the best equipment for recording with this new deck and hadn’t had time to get the proper wires. I also had to deal with things people with turntables often deal with: record skips. This is also the first mix under my new moniker, Starstruck.
Why I Like It: Once again, I was able to implement more EDM tracks as this is a huge breakthrough in music at the moment. I also am glad that I finally got to include some other old school hip-hop tracks without completely ruining the integrity of the overall mix.

The Sounds of Summer 2010: Made because 1) I hadn’t mixed in awhile and 2) USC Rx needed a new one for their Welcome Picnic
Why I Like It:
I was a bit risky with some of the selection here…mixing in some different genres and slowly paying homage to my trance/house roots. I’m really starting to appreciate electro-hop now.

Let It Ride (Jan ’10): Made for Monte Carlo, a mock gambling night fundraiser for the USC School of Pharmacy.
Why I Like It:
Probably the first 5-10 minutes because I’ve never really mixed slow jam-type stuff before.

From Oh-Nine to the Nine-Oh’s (Dec ’09): Made because we were entering the second decade of the millennium and I felt like I should pay tribute to the 90′s as a result. Plus I just thought the title was really catchy.
Why I Like It: A lot of hard beats in the beginning featuring some of my favs: Jay-Z, Drake, Wayne, Biggie. I also like my use of transitioning across many different BPM’s throughout the session.

Vegas Mixtreme (June ’09): Made simply because I hadn’t made a new/relevant mix for over a year. This was dedicated to my buddies and our semi-annual all-guys Vegas trip. It was mixed with specific favorites both new and old school and designed to last most of the 4-hr car travel from Los Angeles:

Why I Like It: Incorporated some of my favorite hip-hop songs of all-time, as well as some of the hottest club bangers.

One For The Kids Mixtape (Feb ’08) (before I got creative with album covers): Started off as a 1hr mix for the dance portion of my brother’s wedding. I was inspired to make it because I was disgusted with what wedding DJ’s considered as “good dance music” when they showcased 2-year overplayed songs that wasn’t even mixed in with proper beat-matching. Once I discovered I had some sort of talent and that it was well-received, I re-did it with the intent of extending it to about 3hours with the intent of friends being able to use it at house parties and such. It’s important to note that this was done by a manual, rigorous copy-and-pasting of wav files in CoolEdit and probably took an aggregate 30 hours to complete.
Why I Like It: It was my first major creation and was happy with the songs I chose. Was also happy that I was able to incorporate party breaks to make things to hype up any crowds that may exist.
